Ganvas Babe Spotlight: Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner was an African American self-taught inventor who invented an adjustable sanitary belt with an inbuilt, moisture-proof napkin pocket. Racial discrimination prevented her invention from being adopted for thirty years.  

In 1956, she was able to save enough money to get her first patent. However, the company that showed interest in her invention, rejected it once they found out that she was African American. Kenner never made any money from the sanitary belt because the patent expired and became public domain, allowing it to be manufactured freely. 

Mary Beatrice went on to have five patents in her lifetime.
